North America / Caribbean >> Caribbean

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the region hit 10 miles from the Haitian capital of Port au Prince on Tuesday. As the poorest country in the western hemisphere, the people are suffering devastaing losses. Two disciples have died and the Port au Prince church building is destroyed along with many homes. See below for what we know at the moment. Disciples Today will keep you posted on news of disciples in Haiti and how you can help.

If you have the means to help, that would be wonderful. The country of Haiti has a great deal of poverty anyway, the information for whom to go to will be on the Disciples Today link. Thank You.

Kaplan & It’s Hidden Fees

I just spent one term with Kaplan University Online. I did alright with a 3.0. But I have a complaint and a warning that I would pass on to any students looking to do their schooling. First of all, at the time of registration I was told to turn in a financial aid "Clearance Letter". I asked my recruiter and my financial aid rep both what is that and how do I get one. They first suggested that I try Sallie Mae and of course I followed their direction. The rep at Sallie Mae didn't know what I was talking about.

I then reported to my financial aid rep what I found and they suggested that I ask the Department of Education. I did what was suggested and the first time I called a person told me that they didn't know what I was talking about. I tried again a few days later and a different rep at Dept of Ed told me, "Sure, I'll mail one out to you!" It never came in the mail. I told this to my financial aid officer and they told me that my financial aid doesn't cover everything and to pay $808 dollars. Also, according to their records my old school was holding onto $1000 that they didn't pay back to the Department of Ed. She said that could be a possible reason for my letter. I asked her if I should get the money and pay Kaplan or the Department of Education. She told me to pay Kaplan and I will not have any overage issues. I got the money and paid them.

By early November, I was receiving calls from the Kaplan Document Collections Department harassing me to give them the "Clearance Letter" Or they will just keep calling. It took me a few weeks to figure out that they were using an "auto-dialer" when I got off of the phone from the Document Collections and received a second call five minutes later from the same department. A rep read an impersonal script at me and I told them, "Nothing has changed in five minutes." Since two weeks ago I have received 3-5 calls per day from the Kaplan Document Collections Department, all this time I told them that none of my lenders know what they are talking about and that I need additional help from the school to get this issue resolved. Their response to me was, "just give us the document or we will block you!"

Last week, I logged in to start getting prepared for my second term and of course I am blocked from my classes. I sought help from my financial aid officer and the Kaplan Review board I informed them of the situation and they did a little more digging. When they got back to me they told me that the Department of Education had reported that they sent $700 more than they were authorized to. To make a long story short, the $808 dollars I paid to Kaplan should have gone to the Dept. of Ed. I asked the financial aid officer, "If you give me back the $808 and if I pay that to the Department of Ed will that clear up the issue?" They told me they would try to approve the refund, and to this day they are still trying to approve the refund. My online classes have started last Wednesday.

I told them if they can't find a way to help me find a solution I will have to go to another school. I gave them a few days to deal with it and to get back to me. Their response is to go ahead and withdraw. However, they are going to charge me a $2500 withdrawal penalty. According to the Department of Education the Kaplan has a 33% retention rate. Be warned, they don't care if you come or go, they are going to get paid.

Sacrifices To God

Acceptable Christian Sacrifices:

Mark 12:33
To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."

Romans 12:1
[ Living Sacrifices ] Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

Philippians 2:17
But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you.

Philippians 4:18
I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

Hebrews 13:15

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name.

Hebrews 13:16

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

The Passing of Animal Sacrifices:

Hebrews 10:1
[ Christ's Sacrifice Once for All ] The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.

Hebrews 5:3
This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 7:27
Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

God's Nature Regarding Sacrifice Is Still The Same:

Malachi 1 6

"A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?" says the LORD Almighty. "It is you, O priests, who show contempt for my name.
"But you ask, 'How have we shown contempt for your name?'

7 "You place defiled food on my altar.
"But you ask, 'How have we defiled you?'
"By saying that the LORD's table is contemptible. 8 When you bring blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice crippled or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?" says the LORD Almighty.

9 "Now implore God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?"-says the LORD Almighty.

Malachi 2

17 You have wearied the LORD with your words.
"How have we wearied him?" you ask.
By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased with them" or "Where is the God of justice?"

Malachi 3

13 "You have said harsh things against me," says the LORD.
"Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?'

14 "You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.' "

16 Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name.

17 "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. [a] I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

Malachi 4

2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.

The Final Blood Sacrifice:

1 John 2:2
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

Hebrews 9:26
Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Fulfillment From The Time of Moses:

Exodus 12:21
Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, "Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover
lamb.

Luke 22:7
[ The Last Supper ] Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

1 Corinthians 5:7
Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.

Romans 3:25
God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—
